Week 2 — Application & Exam Simulation

Fix Week 1's weak spots first, then cover Part V Literary Writing — the marks Week 1 never touched — and close with a full timed 60-mark mock paper under real exam conditions.

📋 Format prototype — for review, not linked from the site. Week 2 of 2 — see Week 1 for the foundations/recall half. Together the pair covers all 60 marks of the real paper: Week 1 targeted 55 marks (vocabulary, grammar/word-skills, prose/poetry/supplementary, memoriter); Week 2 targets the remaining 5 (Part V Literary Writing) plus the full rehearsal.

Introduction

LO 7035′

Report back Week 1's diagnostic results honestly, then set this week's aim: apply everything under real conditions.

TeacherThe teacher shares (without naming individuals) which section the class struggled with most in last week's diagnostic, and says today's first step fixes exactly that — before any new content. Then: this week adds the marks last week never touched (Literary Writing) and ends with the full 60-mark paper, done exactly like exam day.

Targeted Remedial

LO 70925′

Use Week 1's diagnostic tally to decide which ONE or TWO sections need this slot — don't re-run everything, that defeats the point of diagnosing first.

Routing, from the Week 1 tally sheet

Vocabulary or Word-Skills/Grammar weak → re-run a fresh item set in that sub-format, on the board, together.
A text section weak (Prose/Poetry/Supplementary) → re-show that text's mind-map poster, re-ask its LOT questions orally, in pairs.
Memoriter shaky → individual 30-second recitation checks of “The Listeners” while the rest of the class self-tests in pairs.

GuidedWhole class works the identified weak section together, teacher-led.
BalancedSplit into two groups by weak section, working independently with a slip each.
AdvancedStudents who passed the diagnostic peer-tutor those who didn't, on the identified section only.

Literary Writing Workshop

LO 710 · 71635′

Part V asks for any ONE of two formats — students don't know which will appear, so both need a model and a practice attempt. Format compliance matters as much as content here.

Format A — Giving Route/Directions (from a map)

Model (the textbook's own passage, Unit 3 Grammar, filled in): “The head office is in Nungambakkam. It is on College Road. As you go past the station, the office is on the right side.”

Skeleton: starting point → first landmark, with a preposition (past/opposite/next to) → turn, if any → second landmark → destination, with its position (on the right/left).

Practice: using a simple 4-landmark map (school gate → playground → office block → library), give written directions from the gate to the library.

Format B — Letter (e.g. asking leave)

Model skeleton: sender's address → date → salutation (“Respected Madam/Sir,”) → subject line → body (reason for leave, exact dates, the request itself) → closing (“Yours obediently,”) → name.

Practice: write a letter to your class teacher asking for two days' leave to attend a family function.

GuidedCopy and label one full model (either format) together; attempt one practice item with a sentence frame.
BalancedAttempt both practice items independently, self-check against the two skeletons above.
AdvancedAttempt both, timed to 10′ each, then peer-check a partner's letter or directions against the skeleton.

Full Mock Paper

LO 707 · 709 · 7162 hrs

One full-length paper, same structure and time as the real exam: Section I Vocabulary (6) · Section II Grammar/Word-Skills (17) · Section III Prose (13) · Section III Poetry (11) · Section IV Supplementary (8) · Part V Literary Writing (5). Sit it like exam day: silent, timed, notes closed, in the actual exam hall if possible.

GuidedSame paper, but with a 10′ open-poster window before starting, for a last look.
BalancedFull paper, full 2 hours, notes closed throughout.
AdvancedFull paper, full time, then a self-review pass against a model answer key before submitting.

Answer Review

LO 70925′

Go through the mock paper section by section, marks-first: which sections lost the most marks class-wide, right before the actual exam.

TeacherReturn the marked mock paper. For each section, share the class average as a fraction of the total (e.g. “Grammar/Word-Skills: average 10/17”). Spend the most time on whichever section has the lowest fraction. StudentsEach student circles their own two weakest sections and writes one sentence on what went wrong (ran out of time / forgot the format / didn't know the answer).

Follow-up

LO 70310′ + home

Three exam-day tips, then one self-chosen home task matched to each student's own weakest section from Step 5.

Teacher1. Attempt every question — a partial answer beats a blank. 2. Watch the marks-to-minutes ratio; don't over-spend on a 1-mark question. 3. Save 10 minutes at the end to re-check Section I and the memoriter quote. Home taskRevise the flashcards or format-model for whichever section the student circled in Step 5.
